We have something very special and unique in Beaver Dam … it’s the “Wisconsin Arts and Peony Festival”! In just our second year, we are planning the blooms…just right and activities galore. It’s free to attend, but some art experiences may have fees.
Ovans Peony Farm is the largest stem cut peony farm in the state of Wisconsin which currently has over 1200 plants of different peony varieties which will all be in bloom the weekend of the festival.
The Ovans Peony farm will be open for tours during the festival until 5 pm. At the farm, there is a gift shop and stem cut peonies for sale. On Saturday, there will be a food truck and and some additional vendors. Look for yoga in the peonies class, peony design classes and a “Picnic in the Peonies” events as more information is posted.
In downtown Beaver Dam, there are a variety of activities. Look for art vendors and food trucks.
We have strong roots in fiber arts (e.g. quilting and sewing) as Nancy Zieman from the PBS’s longest-running series “Sewing with Nancy” is from Beaver Dam. Her legacy retail shop Nancy Zieman Sewing Studio, along with Mill House Quilts and FireFly Fibers (natural yarn), gives us a trifecta of fiber arts shops with demonstrations, take and makes and promotions.
Attendees can visit the Dodge County Center for the Arts and peruse the Great Wisconsin Quilt Show Botanical Quilt Challenge Exhibit sponsored by PBS Wisconsin and Nancy Zieman Productions. This juried and judged quilt exhibit features 26 quilts, each measuring 30″ W x 40″ L, all representing a botanical theme including gardening, nature, and flowers. The new Nancy Zieman historical exhibit will have just opened in time for the festival. Mill House Quilts will host a “bed turning” at the DCCA as story’s are told about the quilts that are layered and removed on a bed.
In addition to the Peonies and fiber arts, attendees have the opportunity to paint single 12″x12″ mosaic boards to go on a 12’X12′ mosaic mural at the Beaver Dam Area Community Theater. Last year we did portraits of Nancy Zieman and Lois Ehlhart. We have two other local artists to paint in 2022 including Fred McMurray who starred in “My Three Sons” and “Flubber”. These community mosaic murals are led by world-renowned portrait Artist Stephen Bennett who now has a studio in Beaver Dam, WI. Wall Dogs are also scheduled to paint a mural during the festival.
Thecla Harris, who previously worked for the Rosie O’Donnel Foundation, will be offering a kids musical theater workshop on Saturday with a performance for parents to follow.
